Ethiopia: Day 3
Today was bumpy. And I mean that in the literal sense. We woke up early, had a quick breakfast and jumped in the Land Cruisers around 8am. That started our 10 hour journey to Southern Ethiopia. The first 500 kilometers were pretty solid – paved roads, a fair amount of corrugated metal. But as we drove farther and farther south, the roads got more bumpy and the villages surrounding us got less developed. We must’ve seen hundreds of children waving to us as we passed their villages; sometimes they ran with us as long as they could before their legs could no longer keep up with the Land Cruiser. It was really interesting to see the change from city to town to village. I fell asleep during the change from moderately developed towns to tribal villages, so I don’t know if the change was gradual or actually sudden like it was for me. Overall, the drive, though long and kind of cramped, was my first eye-opening experience on this trip. I’m sure there will be more.
